Unruh scores 20, Lady Demons fend off Olathe South 49-37 in Mid America Classic
MCPHERSON–Becca Unruh scored 20 points Friday and Dodge City pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 49-37 win over Olathe South in the loser’s bracket of the Mid America Classic at McPherson’s Roundhouse.
Unruh was more efficient in Friday’s contest than in Thursday’s loss where she scored 14 points, but attempted 24 shots from the field. She was 6-of-16 Friday plus a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, which became crucial down the stretch.
Dodge City shot more than 30 percentage points above their average from the foul line and went 10-for-12 in the game.
The Lady Demons scored 20 points off 17 Olathe South turnovers. Head coach Kelley Snodgrass tabbed transition offense as a point of emphasis before the game, and her challenge to the team garnered quite a response.
Dodge City’s only deficit in the game was 3-2 early in the first quarter, and though the Lady Falcons tied the contest on three occasions in the second half, they were never able to regain the lead.
The Lady Demons improve to 5-7 with the win and return to action Saturday when they battle either Valley Center or Manhattan in the fifth place game of the Mid American Classic. Tipoff is slated for 3:15 p.m. CT.
