Hugoton sweeps Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming out of Sterling Invitational play, the Scott City Beavers would play host to the Hugoton Eagles in GWAC play on Wednesday night. It would be a sweep for the Eagles, as the Lady Eagles picked up a 59-50 win, while the Hugoton boys went on a big run in the third quarter, en route to a 69-36 win.

For the third time in 18 days, these two teams met up. Four days following their match up in the Sterling Invitational Championship, the Lady Beavers would host the Lady Eagles in the rubber game of the season. Scott City led 8-5 late in the first quarter, before Hugoton went on a 6-0 run to lead 11-8 after the first quarter. Over an eight minute stretch, the Lady Eagles used a 21-5 run to lead 26-13 with 1:20 left before the break, as the Lady Beavers closed the gap to 26-15 at halftime. Hugoton (8-5, 1-1 GWAC) would grow their lead to as big as 15 early in the second half at 32-17 with 6:20 left in the third quarter. The teams would trade points in the third period, and Scott City was able to pull to within 42-32 heading into the final stanza. The Lady Eagles led 50-39 with 4:29 left, when the Lady Beavers used a 6-0 run to get to within 50-45 with 3:07 left. Both teams would trade runs, and Scott City (6-7, 0-1) got it back to 55-50 with 47.8 seconds left. Hugoton the No. 10 ranked team in Class 4A, closed the game out at the free throw line to come out with a 59-50 win.

Summya Adigun had led the way with 27 points, while Gianna Vos added 18 for Hugoton. Scott City got 14 apiece from Erika Felker and Avery Lewis, who had a career-high, and 12 points from Brooke Strine.

Hugoton has won two straight against Scott City, and three in a row in Scott City over the Lady Beavers. Since 1989, they lead the series 29-13. The Lady Eagles have won a season-high four consecutive games, while Scott City has dropped three in a row.

For the first half, it felt as if there was a bit of a hangover from tournament play from last week, as both teams struggled out of the gate. It would be tied at four early on, before Hugoton went on a 9-2 run over the final three minutes of the quarter to lead 13-6, eight minutes into the game. Scott City (6-7, 0-1 GWAC) got it to within 13-10 early in the second frame, the Eagles closed out the final six minutes of the half on a 12-2 run to lead 25-13 at the break. They grew the lead to 33-18 with 5:02 left in the third frame. That’s when the Beavers would make a run to get it to within 33-26 with 3:42 left in the third quarter, using an 8-0 run. When it looked like Scott City would keep the game close, Hugoton (11-2, 2-0) got hot from the floor. A 25-4 run over a five-minute stretch gave the Eagles a 58-30 with 5:13 left. The Beavers would use a 6-2 run make it 60-36 with 3:01 left. However, the Eagles ended the game with the final nine points to pick up a 69-36 win.

Dasean Lewis led the way with 14 points for the Eagles, while Ryle Riddlesperger had 13 and Carson Bennett and Izeyah Harris had 12 points apiece. Scott City was led by Jackson Rumford with 16 points and Lawson Bailey pitched in 12 points.

Hugoton has won three straight over the Beavers. The Eagles have won 10 straight games after starting 1-2, and are No. 6 in Class 4A. Scott City has dropped three straight.
