Great Bend, KS (WesternKansasNews.com) – On Wednesday night at Barton College, Garden City came to play on both the men’s and women’s sides. The Women fell late despite holding their first lead at halftime in a game in 2023. The men meanwhile hung on late to fend off the Cougar’s comeback bid and win their 5th game in 7 tries.

For the women, injuries have really hurt the team late in games this season, which was evident in the 3rd quarter on Wednesday. After taking a 29-28 lead into the halftime break the Broncbuster just ran out of gas in the 3rd quarter. Garden City was outscored 17-6 and would never recover from the late Barton run.

“There were more positives tonight with this group, especially with the battle of attrition we have been dealing with as of late, I liked the effort but couldn’t get enough stops late to stay close,” Said Head Coach Antwain Scales after the game.

The Broncbusters were led in scoring by Dayshawna Carter who scored 20 points and behind her was Stevi Yancy who scored a new career of 12 points on 4 made threes.

Head Coach Rusty Elmore said his team is considering their next stretch of games the “revenge tour” and they picked up the first win of three on that list at Barton on Wednesday. Garden City avenged an earlier season loss to the Cougars in big part to the balanced scoring of the team. Four Broncbusters reached double figures and were led by Buru Naivalurua with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

“When Buru plays like that we are really hard to beat and he did an amazing job again tonight,” said Associate Head Coach Bobby Naubert.

The Broncbusters won their 5th game in the last seven tries and now sit in the top 4 of the Jayhawk Conference standings. The Broncbusters are back in action this Sunday, January 22nd vs. Coffeyville. The Coverage will start at 1:40 pm on 99.9 The Rock.
