Hugoton, Scott City split doubleheader
Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time in 17 days, Hugoton and Scott City would return to play, as the Eagles played host to the Beavers to open up the 2023 portion of the schedule. It would be a split in the doubleheader, as the Scott City girls hung on for a 45-42 win, while the Eagle boys soared in the second half to an 80-46 win.

The first game of the night would be a thriller, with nine ties and five lead changes. Hugoton jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, before the Lady Beavers responded with 10 of the next 12 points to lead 10-8 late in the first quarter. It would be tied at 10, eight minutes in. Scott City led early in the second quarter 15-12, when the Lady Eagles responded with seven straight to take a 19-15 lead with 5:37 left in the half. The Lady Beavers would respond by tying the game on three occasions, with the last being at 24 apiece at the break. Scott City (4-4) scored the first five points of the second half, when Hugoton would counter with six straight to lead 30-29, midway through the third frame. The Lady Beavers would come back with the final eight points of the third quarter to take a 37-30 lead heading into the fourth period. For most of the fourth quarter, Scott City would counter every Hugoton (3-4) run. However, the Lady Eagles went on an 8-2 run over a two-minute stretch to pull to within 43-42, with 1:02 left. Hugoton forced a turnover and a foul with 17 seconds left, but would miss the one-and-one. Scott City hit a pair of free throws, and the Lady Eagles missed the game-tying three in the final seconds, as the Lady Beavers escaped with a 45-42 win.
Brooke Strine led the way for Scott City with 24 points and had 13 rebounds unofficially. Kendall Gentry and Erika Felker added seven. The Lady Beavers were without Brinlie Stevens and Cheyenne Cramer. Hugoton was led by Gianna Vos with 20 points and Summya Adigun finished with 13 points. They were without Abigail Slocum for a majority of the game, as she left with an injury in the first quarter.
With the win, Scott City snapped a six-game losing streak to Hugoton, and ended a three-game skid in Hugoton. Their last win in Hugoton was December 14, 2018, when they won 42-40. Since 1989, the Lady Eagles lead the series 27-13.

Hugoton never trailed in the game, as they would use several runs to pull away in the game. The Eagles jumped out early to a 7-0 lead, before Scott City answered back to get to within 7-5 midway through the first quarter. Hugoton would go on a 13-5 run over the final 3:28 of the period to lead 20-12 after the first quarter. The Eagles scored six straight to lead 26-13 with 4:19 left before intermission, only to see Scott City (4-4) eventually trim the lead to 30-25 with 42 seconds left before the break, using a 10-4 run. Hugoton would hit a pair of three’s to take a 36-27 lead. In the second half, the Beavers were unable to put together a rally, as the Eagles outscored Scott City 20-7 in the third stanza to lead 56-34 going into the final period. a 9-4 run pushed Hugoton (5-2) to a 27 point lead with 5:37 left, and they closed the game on a 13-3 run to pick up an 80-46 victory.
Four Eagles were in double figures, led by Carson Bennett’s 21 points, while Dasean Lewis had 19, Emmett Gaskgill added 13 points, and Ryle Riddlesperger had 11. Scott City was led by Jackson Rumford’s 16 points and Lawson Bailey had 15.
Hugoton has won six straight at home against the Beavers, and have now won 12 of the last 13 in the series. Since 1989, both teams have won 19 games apiece.
