Scott City swept by Goodland at home

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers played host to Goodland on Tuesday night in their final games before the Christmas break. It would be a sweep for the visitors, as the Cowgirls won 62-38, while the Cowboys came out with a 41-33 victory.

The defending Class 3A State Champions and current No. 1 team in the state played that part from the very beginning, as they started out with the games first 13 points and never looked back. Goodland led 23-8 after the first period, and led 25-8 in the opening minute of the second frame. Scott City (3-4) scored the next seven points to pull to within 25-15 with 4:16 left before the break. After that, the Cowgirls went on a 23-1 run over the next five minutes of the game to lead 48-16 with 5:36 left in the third period. Goodland (6-0) led by as many as 35 twice in the fourth quarter, and led 59-26 heading into the final frame. With a continuous clock in the fourth, the Lady Beavers outscored the Cowgirls 12-3, as Goodland picked up the 62-38 victory.

Talexa Weeter led Goodland with 22 points, while Jaxi Mitchek added 16. Scott City got 13 points from Erika Felker and a career-high nine points from Avery Lewis.

The Cowgirls have now won five straight against Scott City, their longest in the series since 2015-17, and since 1981, they lead the series 37-30.

Goodland Boys 41, Scott City 33
It would be a night of cold shooting for the Beavers, and in their comeback efforts, would hamper them. After a two-all tie, the Cowboys scored the games next 10 points and would lead 13-7 after the first quarter. An 11-2 run gave Goodland their largest lead at 24-9 with 2:14 left before halftime. Scott City (4-3) made a run late in the second and into the third quarter, using a 10-1 run to get to within 25-19 midway through the third period. Goodland (4-2) scored six of the final nine points of the quarter to go up 33-24 heading into the fourth stanza. The Beavers pulled to within four at 33-29 in the first minute of the fourth period, and would miss several opportunities to get closer the rest of the way. They got to within 37-33 with 14.4 seconds left, before the Cowboys hit four free throws in the final 11 seconds to come out with the 41-33 win.

Brady Brumbaugh led the way for Goodland with 13 points, while Devontay Hardy added nine. Scott City was led by Jackson Rumford’s 11 points. 

Goodland’s win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Beavers, and was their third win in the last 10 seasons. Scott City leads the series 41-30 since 1979.
