Scott City swept at Colby

Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City knew it would a tough challenge in front of them on Friday night, as the Beavers made the trip to Colby to face GWAC foe Colby in non-league play. In the end, it would the Eagles who would pick up the doubleheader sweep. The Colby girls pulled away for a 60-44 win, while the Eagle boys rallied for a 52-41 win.

The first half would go back and forth, before Colby pulled away in the fourth quarter. Scott City led 15-8 late in the first quarter, before the Lady Eagles scored seven points in 10 seconds, forcing two straight turnovers to tie the game at 15 heading into the second quarter. You had the feeling that was the point that turned the tide. Both teams would battle back and forth in the second frame, as Colby (3-1) took a 24-23 lead into the break. They opened with six straight to lead 30-23 with 4:38 left in the third quarter. The Lady Eagles expanded their lead to 36-28 late in the third quarter, and led by six heading into the final period. Scott City (3-3) started out on a tear in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, using an 8-2 run to tie the game at 38 with a little over six minutes left. Turnovers would be costly all night for the Lady Beavers, and it caught up with them in the end, as Colby closed the final 5:41 out on a 22-6 run to win 60-44.

Alisabeth Barton had a game-high 23 points to lead Colby, while Ali Flanagin and Emma Wright each had 10 points. Scott City was led by Brooke Strine with 17 points.

Colby has won the last two in the series, and since 1980, hold a 57-18 lead in the series. They have a three-game win streak at home against the Lady Beavers, who have dropped two straight games for the first time this year.

Scott City couldn’t have gotten out to a better start. Despite turning the ball over on their opening possession, they scored the games first nine points, and led 11-6 after the first quarter. After the The Beavers took a 14-6 lead early in the second quarter, they would go on a five-minute scoring drought and see the Eagles tie the game at 14 midway through the period. Colby took a brief lead, before Scott City (4-2) scored the next four points and took a 21-20 halftime lead. To open the second half, the Eagles would score seven of the first 10 points and never look back. Colby (4-0) built a 35-26 lead with 3:12 left in the third stanza. Scott City couldn’t get any closer than six points in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles built on their lead and never let the Beavers put together back to back scores in the second half. Colby would take a 52-41 victory.

Guy Tubbs led Colby with 18 points, and despite not attempting a shot until early in the second quarter, Hunter Vaughn ended up with 15 points. Scott City was led by Jackson Rumford’s 19 points, while Dylan Metzger drained four three’s and finished with 12 points.

Colby has won seven of the last eight in the series, and leads the series 41-35 since 1979. Scott City has led at the break in both losses, and in both losses, they have finished with 41 points.
