Cimarron and Scott City split Tuesday doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night saw the first of two matchups, as the Scott City Beavers played host to the Cimarron Bluejays in a battle of GWAC schools in non-league play. The night would see a split, as the Lady Bluejays picked up a 52-44 win, while the Beaver boys pulled away in the second half for a 55-44 victory.

Scott City would start out strong, as the Lady Beavers hit their first six shots from the field to take the early 14-6 lead. Cimarron responded with a 12-2 run to close the first quarter to take an 18-16 lead, a lead they would never surrender. Their run would extend to a 23-3 run over a seven-minute span of the first half, as they led 29-17 with 3:40 left before the break. The Lady Beavers closed out with the final six points to trail 29-23 at the half. Scott City (3-2) could not get any closer than 33-30 the rest of the night, as the Lady Bluejays led 40-31 heading into the final stanza. The Lady Beavers made it 49-44 with 1:23 left, and had their chances to cut the deficit more, but Cimarron (4-1) forced a pair of turnovers late, and came out with the 52-44 win.

Taryn Jantz had 16 points to lead Cimarron, while Caitlyn Sonday had 15 points and 11 rebounds and McKayla Miller added 12. Scott City was led by Erika Felker with 21 points. 

With the win, Cimarron has won six straight over the Lady Beavers, and lead the series 16-9.

Cimarron grabbed the early lead in the finale for the first part of the opening quarter. The Beavers would trail 9-7 midway through the opening frame before they put together a 12-0 run to take a 19-9 lead late in the first quarter. In the second period, the Bluejays got to within four late in the half at 28-24, before Scott City (4-1) scored the final points of the half to take a 31-24 lead. Cimarron started out on a tear to begin the second half, using an 8-2 run to pull to within 33-32 early in the third quarter. The Beavers would settle down and closed the period out on a 12-2 run to lead 45-34 heading into the fourth quarter. They would start the fourth quarters with a 12-0 run to lead 57-37 late in the game, which was their largest lead of the night. Cimarron (2-3) closed the scoring with the final se11ven points to make the final 57-44. 

Jackson Rumford lead Scott City with 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Dylan Metzger added 13. The Bluejays were led by Trace Kopper with 12 points and Lane Beery poured in 11. 

With the win, the Beavers are now 18-1 against Cimarron since 2005. Scott City is 4-1 for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
