Red Demon boys blow out Woodward for 1st win, girls struggle
WOODWARD–Dodge City’s boys forced 30 Woodward turnovers and converted those into 39 points to cruise past the Boomers 73-35 for their first win, but the Lady Demons’ offense struggled mightily in a 42-28 loss Tuesday at Boomer Fieldhouse.
In the boys game, Dodge City took advantage of a shorthanded Boomer team that played without Carter Reid due to illness and missed Kash Shipley most of the game with a scratched eye.
That said, the Red Demons played their most complete game without question, knocking down 10 threes and shooting nearly 51% from the field in the contest.
Tochi Okoro recorded his first double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, seven of which were offensive. Daelyn Unzueta scored a team-high 14 points and Victor Brito had a career-high 12.
During a stretch that spanned the second and third quarters, Dodge City put together a 28-3 run that gave them massive separation the rest of the way.
The Red Demons improve to 1-3 with the win and return to action Saturday when they travel to Wichita Southeast. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
In the girls game, the Lady Demons suffered through their worst shooting stretch of the season in the first half, going just 1-for-17 before the break with 17 turnovers. They trailed 22-3 at halftime.
Dodge City went on a 14-3 push late in the third quarter, outscoring Woodward 17-9 overall in that frame. But turnovers plagued the Demons the entire way to the tune of 26 giveaways, and a few critical ones in the fourth allowed the Boomers to pull away again.
The shooting struggles continued for Dodge City, as they shot less than 26% from the floor and 1-of-12 from distance.
No Lady Demons reached double figures in points, but Easha Potts had a team-high nine points. Alex Gere collected 10 rebounds for Dodge.
The Lady Demons fall to 1-3 with the loss and return to action Saturday when they travel to Wichita Southeast. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
