Conqs sweep Cloud County

DODGE CITY–Jacobi Sebock scored 20 points and scooped up 15 rebounds for No. 9 Dodge City Monday, and the Conqs fought off No. 21 Cloud County 82-80, while the No. 16 Conq women buried 14 threes and dominated the T-Birds 84-69 in a doubleheader at the Student Activities Center.
In the men’s game, Dodge City used a late first-half spurt to take a 43-36 lead into the halftime break. That momentum carried over to the start of the second half, where the Conqs quickly built a 14-point lead.
But the T-Birds came charging back and closed the gap to as close as two with 41 seconds remaining on a layup by Cheikh Sow. After a Conq turnover, Cloud had a chance to take the lead in the closing seconds, but Joe Kearney couldn’t connect on a three and Corey Sawyer fouled Jason Edwards with just over four seconds left.
Edwards, who was an 80% free throw shooter entering the game, missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Joe Kearney got a half-court shot off just before the buzzer, but it hit the backboard and the Conqs survived a late scare to regain sole possession of first place in the KJCCC.
In addition to Sebock’s big night, Avnoor Bhullar was one point shy of his career-high of 16, Edwards contributed 16, Chris Robinson added 13 and Cam Malray chipped in 10.
Dodge City made 9-of-22 three-pointers in the contest–nearly a 41% clip.
The No. 9 Conquistadors improve to 11-2 (7-1 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Saturday, Dec. 31 when they host No. 5 Indian Hills. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
In the women’s game, Dodge City came out on fire, knocking down eight threes before halftime. They took control with a 27-17 lead after the first quarter and never led by fewer than double digits again.
The Conqs buried 14 threes in the game and were led in scoring by Jenna Rose Mafua, who tallied 18 points–one point short of her career high.
Dodge City’s defense held Cloud County to just 5-for-26 from behind the arc, which is less than 20%.
The No. 16 Conquistadors improve to 12-2 (7-1 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Wednesday, Jan. 4 when they travel to Independence. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
