Garden City knocks opens up 4-0 for the first time since 2018 with a win over Coronado
Garden City, KS (WesternKansasNews.com) – Another fast-paced night was on display for the Garden City boy’s basketball team. It wasn’t quite as quick of a start but once the Buffs found their way around the Coronado zone. The offense started clicking for Garden City in tune to an 83-60 victory on the opening night of the Clarion Roundball Classic from The Garden.
After just one quarter the score was 16-13 Garden City was ahead by just three points. Then the barrage opened up for the Buffalos. They took a 24-point 2nd quarter to the halftime break leading Coronado 40-26. “We are going to start seeing a lot more zone looks from other teams’ defense, most teams can’t run with us in man to man so the zone is something we are going to have to get used to seeing.” said head coach Jeff Willamson.
After the up-tempo 2nd quarter Coronado would make a few runs but Garden City was able to answer every single time. Four buffaloes finished in double figures led by senior Jace Steinmetz who had 21 points. Steinmetz has now opened the season with three 20-plus point games. Right behind him was Caleb Wiese who had 17 points and 8 rebounds, then sophomore Jake Underwood who had 12 points and 12 rebounds keeping his double-double average to open up the season going. Isaiah Salinas rounded out the double-figure scoring with 15 points. “It was nice to be able to get production from all levels tonight whether it was the perimeter or inside, we will need more of that moving forward.” Said Williamson.
Garden City’s next test will come in the form of the Scott City Beavers tonight at 6 pm. The game can be heard on 99.9 “The Rock” the home for Garden City Athletics.
