Despite slow shooting, Lady Buffs knock off Coronado to open the Clarion Roundball Classic
Garden City, KS (WesternKansasNews.com) – February 14th. That was the date of last season’s 3rd win for the Garden City Lady Buff basketball team. Fast forward to December 9th of this year and they have captured win number three in just four tries after a 55-34 win over Coronado.
This game was an early season rematch from the season opener that finish in a 2-point win for Garden City 50-48. The game went a bit differently this time around. After a slow shooting start in the 1st half that ended 24-16 in favor of Garden City, the Buffaloes were able to pull ahead late despite not having senior Makenzie Lucas and freshman KJ Pinchon who both battled with foul trouble late in the game.
“I loved the way our girls responded despite a lot of our shots not falling, then you mix in the bench who played a big part, especially with Makenzie and KJ out it was nice to see that from this group.” Said head coach Jacob Miller coaching just his 4th game for Garden City
Amaya Gallegos led the scoring with 15 points while Aileen Becceril was right behind her with 13 points. Jenn Pinchon also scored double figures with 10 points for the first time this season.
“Tonight’s effort just speaks to this group, we are learning how to win and hopefully there is a lot more where this came from,” Miller said.
The Lady Buffs have a matchup tonight with the Lady Beavers of Scott City who are coming off of a loss to Liberal. The game can be heard on 99.9 The Rock with pregame beginning at 3:40 pm and tipoff at 4 pm from The Garden.
