Scott City opens Roundball Classic with a sweep of Coronado

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday night was the opening night of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic, as the Scott City Beavers played host to the Coronado Cougars out of Colorado Springs. It would be a big night for the home team, as the Lady Beavers pulled away in the second half for a 60-38 victory, while the boys thumped the Cougars 66-29.

The Lady Beavers never trailed, even thought they saw their lead early on at one point at 7-6. Scott City would close the first period with the final six points to lead 13-6 heading into the second quarter. In the second frame, the offense would look solid, as they outscored the Lady Cougars 19-12, and led 32-18 lead at the break. The Lady Beavers never led by any fewer than 12 the rest of the night, and used an 11-2 run over the final half of the third quarter to lead 52-31 going into the fourth quarter. Scott City (2-0) closed out the final five minutes on an 8-2 run and prevailed 60-38.

Brooke Strine had a career-high 23 points, while Erika Felker added 11 points. Eight players scored for Scott City. Allison Leisher led Coronado (1-3) with 12 points, while Bella Martinez added 11 and Dayshanay Bruner finished with 10 points.

With the win, Scott City is 2-0 for the second straight year, and now has won all four meetings with Coronado.

The game would start out sluggish for both teams, with many missed shots and plenty of turnovers, but the Beavers would make up for a slow start with a strong finish. Neither team scored in the first three minutes. Scott City never trailed, despite being tied twice early on. They closed out the final 90 seconds of the period with six straight to lead 10-4 after the opening eight minutes. Coronado (0-4) scored five quick points in the first minute of the second frame, but the Beavers would use a run of 26-8 over a five-minute stretch of the second period, and eventually took a 36-21 halftime lead, after leading by as many as 19 points. Scott City (2-0) scored the first seven points of the second half, and limited the Cougars to eight second half points. The Beavers built a 58-26 lead heading into the final frame, and outscored Coronado 8-3 in the fourth quarter that saw a continuous clock, in a 66-29 victory.

Jackson Rumford had a new career-best 24 points, while Lawson Bailey added 15, as eight Beavers scored. Coronado got a team-best 14 points from Realiti Smith, which saw 12 come in the second quarter.

Scott City snapped a two-game losing streak to the Cougars, as the four-game series is now tied at two games apiece. The Beavers are 2-0 for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
