Conqs make statement with sweep at Butler

EL DORADO–Dodge City’s men wore down No. 24 Butler in the second half Wednesday and pulled away for an 84-70 win, and the Conq women survived a furious fourth quarter Grizzly rally to win 69-63 in a doubleheader at the Power Plant.
In the men’s game, Dodge City’s Jason Edwards was the star of the show yet again, tallying 29 points including 14-of-18 from the free throw line. He also collected seven rebounds.
Avnoor Bhullar had a career-high 17 points on 4-of-7 shooting from outside the arc.
The Conqs led 37-34 at halftime, but then began the second half on a 20-5 run and never looked back. Two Butler technical fouls early in the second half sparked that run further, and Dodge led by as many as 24 points late in the game.
Dodge City shot 50% from the field and out-rebounded Butler 43-28.
The No. 8 Conquistadors improve to 10-1 (6-0 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Saturday when they host Hutchinson. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
In the women’s game, Dodge City led most of the game, but had to stave off a late Butler rally to clinch the win. The Conqs built a 19-point lead with 8:26 left in the fourth quarter, but the Grizzlies capitalized on a couple turnovers late to make it interesting.
Butler got as close as 62-58 with a Freddie Wallace free throw, but the Conqs slammed the door with one of Bree Stephens’ two important threes with 1:03 remaining.
The Conqs are in the top 10 nationally in made threes per game, and they knocked down 8 Wednesday night.
Jada Burton led Dodge City with 15 points.
Dodge City turned 17 Butler turnovers into 18 points, a trend that has been consistent for the Conqs all season.
