Scott City sweeps Hoisington to open season
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time since 2004, Scott City and Hoisington would meet up on the basketball court. Friday night’s season opener for both schools was the first matchup since they were members of the old Mid State Activities Association. The Beavers would get the season started off well, as they swept the doubleheader. Scott City would win 40-22 on the girls side, while the Beaver boys picked up a 50-40 win.
Scott City Girls 40, Hoisington 22
The Lady Cardinals would lead early, but the Lady Beavers would have the big run in the game. Trailing 9-6, Scott City scored the next 16 points and never look back. In fact, they poured in 10 second quarter points, shutting out Hoisington in the period, and took a 18-9 halftime lead. They grew their lead to 22-8 with 2:14 left in the third quarter, before the Lady Cardinals (0-1) scored their first points in 18:08 of game time. Leading 24-14 heading into the final frame, the Lady Beavers saw their lead trimmed to 26-19 with 6:09 left. After that, they closed the game with a 14-3 run to pick up a 40-22 victory.
Scott City (1-0) was led by Erika Felker with 16 points, and Brooke Strine had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Hoisington was led by Addy Mason’s nine points and Jordyn Boxberger added seven.
With the win, Scott City leads the series 12-5, and won their seventh consecutive season opener.

Scott City Boys 50, Hoisington 40
Turnovers were the name of the game early on for Scott City, as they committed five turnovers in their first five possessions. They would eventually settle down, and win their game with defense and rebounding. Hoisington led 7-4 midway through the first quarter, when the Beavers scored 10 unanswered to take a 14-7 lead heading into the second period. Scott City would lead by eight at 21-13 with 5:40 left before halftime, before the Cardinals scored seven straight to pull to within 21-20 with 3:26 left in the second period. The Beavers would take a 25-22 lead into the locker room. In the second half, Scott City (1-0) never trailed, and outscored Hoisington 15-6 in the third quarter and took a 40-28 lead into the fourth period. The Beavers led by as many as 13 in the second half, with the last coming at 43-30 in the first minute of the fourth frame. Hoisington (0-1) got to within eight on two occasions, with the last coming at 46-30 with a little over three minutes left. Scott City scored four of the final six points to pick up the win 50-40.
Three Beavers were in double figures, led by Jackson Rumford with 20 points and 12 rebounds unofficially, while Dylan Metzger had 14 and Lawson Bailey added 10. Hoisington was led by Tony Moore with 11 points.
Scott City has won six straight in the series, and lead the all-time series 14-4 since 1983. It was their ninth straight season-opening victory.
