Conq men, women win home openers
DODGE CITY–Dodge City’s men fought off a late McCook rally to win 68-57 Tuesday and the women rolled Northern Oklahoma-Enid 82-36 in a doubleheader at the Student Activities Center.
In the men’s game, Dodge City built a lead that grew to as many as 18 points in the second half, but much like in their opening game at Indian Hills, that lead began to slip down the stretch. McCook got as close as two possessions before the Conqs got a couple of breakaway layups to seal the win.
Offense was sloppy for both teams. Neither team shot better than 40% from the field, and they combined for 44 turnovers and 41 fouls. They were also a combined 8-for-44 from three-point range and 19-for-41 on free throws.
Jason Edwards scored 15 points for the Conqs, including a key layup late to help put the game on ice.
The Conquistadors improve to 1-1 with the win and return to action Friday when they take on Trinidad State in the Trinidad Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
In the women’s game, Dodge raced out to a 26-8 start in the first 10 minutes. The defensive intensity was high the entire game, as the Conqs forced 35 Lady Jet turnovers–many of which resulted in transition points for Dodge City.
Enid struggled from distance, shooting an ice cold 2-for-12 on three-point tries. That was below their already concerning 20% average for the season.
Three Conqs scored in double figures, including Leah Mafua, who posted 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. She helped Dodge shoot nearly 48% from the floor in the game.
The Conquistadors improve to 2-1 with the win and return to action Friday when they take on Ranger in the Midland College Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
