LEVELLAND–Celia Sumbane and Victoria Carvalho combined for 27 points Saturday, and eighth-ranked South Plains outlasted Dodge City 66-59 in the final game of the South Plains College Classic at the Texan Dome.

Isabella Jaramillo knocked down a three right before halftime to give the Texans a 36-27 halftime lead.

Dodge City was able to close the gap to as close as one point early in the fourth quarter thanks to a 20-5 run on a jumper by Georgia Gray, but was never able to grab the lead. South Plains immediately responded with what turned out to be the decisive 10-2 run.

Leah Mafua led Dodge City with 16 points and five rebounds. She was the only Conq to score in double figures after six players accomplished that feat in their opener Friday.

Dodge turned the ball over 17 times resulting in 14 South Plains points. The Texans also outscored Dodge City 38-28 in the paint.

The Conquistadors fall to 1-1 with the loss.

Dodge City returns to action Tuesday when they take on Northern Oklahoma-Enid in the Conqs’ home opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
