Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the second time in four years, the Scott City Beavers will host the Cheney Cardinals in the playoffs. This time around, it’s the Regional round of the Class 3A playoffs on what is expected to be a cold night at Darner Field.

Cheney enters with a 7-2 record, after a 28-7 win at home against Hugoton to open up the playoffs last Friday night. The Cardinals led 7-0 after the opening quarter, 21-0 at the break, and both teams scored once in the second half. They put up 301 yards of offense in the win, with 182 coming through the air. This year’s Cheney team is averaging 33 points a contest and over 300 yards of offense, while giving up 13 points and around 200 yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Josh Burdick is approaching 2,000 passing yards. Cheney is in its fourth consecutive regional playoff game.

Scott City gave up the game’s opening touchdown on the first play of the game last Friday against Smoky Valley, then proceeded to score the games final 41 points in a 41-6 win over the Vikings at Darner Field last Friday night. The Beavers improved to 8-1 on the year, as they led 21-6 after the first quarter, and at the break, and tacked on 14 fourth quarter points. They are scoring around 35 points per game and are above 300 yards of offense per contest, while allowing 11 points and 150 yards per contest. Brady Welker has 15 rushing touchdowns and has over 700 yards on the ground. Scott City is 18-5 in the regional round.

Cheney has won all six meetings with GWAC-member schools since 2019, and won the lone meeting against the Beavers 38-7 in the 2019 Class 3A Sectional round.

Tonight’s winner will play at Clay Center next Friday. The Tigers shut out Wichita Collegiate 35-0 Thursday night in Wichita. The game was moved up, due to forecasts showing the potential of severe weather earlier in the week.

Kickoff from Darner Field is at 6 pm, with a 5:30 pregame on Mix 94.5. You can also listen online at westernkansasnews.com/mix94 or on the TuneIn Radio App by searching KSKL.
