Conqs fall at buzzer in OT heartbreaker at Indian Hills

OTTUMWA–Don McHenry knocked down a left wing three as time expired Tuesday, giving No. 3 Indian Hills an 88-87 overtime victory over Dodge City in the season-opener at the Hellyer Center.
Dodge led 75-69 with just 2:19 remaining in regulation, but the Warriors scored the next six points to push the game to overtime. Indian Hills did have the last possession in regulation as well, but they didn’t get a clean look.
In overtime, the Conqs again led by as many as six, but Indian Hills had trimmed that lead to just one with 16 seconds left. After a Shawn Warrior turnover, Indian Hills returned the favor with an errant pass from Truth Harris that ended up in the hands of Warrior, forcing Indian Hills to foul Chris Robinson with :03.6 left.
Robinson split the pair, but notably hit the second, which gave the Warriors time to inbound and attack downhill. Enoch Kalambay found Don McHenry in the front court, who drilled the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.
The win marked the 36th straight in home openers at the Hellyer Center.
Dodge City was led by Tonkawa transfer DJ Jones, who scored 32 points on 9-of-14 shooting and 12-of-14 at the free throw line.
The two teams combined to shoot 78 free throws in the contest, with Dodge going 30-of-44 for around 68%.
Turnovers were another problem for both teams as they combined for 42.
The Conquistadors fall to 0-1 with the loss.
Dodge City returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 8 when they host McCook in their home-opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
