High winds and dry conditions spark multiple fires across Western Kansas
Garden City, Kan (WesternKansasNews.Com) – At approximately 2:01 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2022, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to a reported grass fire at the intersection of Towns Road and US Highway 50.
Upon arrival, fire personnel confirmed there was a large grass fire on the south side of US Highway 50 that had spread to the north side of the road. As of approximately 3:50 p.m., the fire is 70% contained. Personnel from Wildland Task Force 7, Kearny County, Holcomb, Garfield Township, Kansas Forestry Service, Pierceville Township are on scene actively working the fire.
At this time, Finney County Sheriff Department is on scene diverting traffic while US Highway 50 is closed from Farmland Road to Towns Road. Please continue to avoid the area.
Earlier Sunday in Hamilton County, the K-27 was shut down due to a hay bail fire. Fire crews were able to contain that blaze quickly.
In Ness and Rush counties, the K-4 Highway has been shut down to multiple fires. Also reports of multiple downed power lines across the state.
