Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City knew it would be a tall task on Saturday at the Class 3A Sub-State volleyball tournament at the Max Jones Fieldhouse in Goodland. Facing state-ranked Goodland right off the bat was a big challenge, and one that would be difficult to overcome.

The Cowgirls would jump out early in both sets, and the Lady Beavers were unable to get a run going, as they fell 25-10, 25-12 to eventual champion Goodland in the first round of the tournament.

Scott City fell behind early 6-0 before their first point, and didn’t string together two straight until it was 19-5. There, they scored four of the next six points, but Goodland responded with four of the final five points of the set to win 25-10. The Lady Beavers would be more competitive early on in the second set, as they trailed 10-5. However, the Cowgirls would go on a 7-2 run to lead 17-7. Scott City came back to within 18-11, but Goodland closed the door with seven of the final eight points to win 25-12.

Scott City ended their season at 10-28 on the year.

Goodland would win the tournament, sweeping Norton 25-17, 25-18, and defeated Cimarron in the finals 25-11, 25-11. The Lady Bluejays of Cimarron were the seventh seed, as they swept Lakin in the first round 25-20, 25-12, and rallied in the third set to stun Holcomb 25-17, 21-25, 26-24. Holcomb knocked out Colby in the first round 25-17, 25-19. Norton bounced Southwestern Heights in the opening round 25-13, 25-12.

Lakin ends their year at 31-6, Southwestern Heights at 19-19, Holcomb at 27-12 and Cimarron finished 18-22.

Goodland is the third seed at the Class 3A State Tournament, as they have second-seed Riverton, sixth-seed Eureka, and seventh-seed Heritage Christian, who won last year’s Class 3A State Title.
