Holcomb girls, Scott City boys claim GWAC cross country titles

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their final race before regional competition, the seven Great West Activities Conference schools made their way to Hugoton on Thursday for the annual GWAC meet. It was a first time winner in the girls race, as Holcomb would win their first GWAC cross country championship, while the Scott City boys continued the beat, as they won their fourth consecutive league title.

On the boys side, the Beavers won the meet with 40 points, squeaking by Holcomb by three points, while Cimarron was third. The Longhorns would win the top three spots, as Brody Deniston was the league champion, followed by Jeb Stoppel and Landen Leonard. Ivan Armendariz was fourth to lead the Beavers, and Adion Nelson from Ulysses was fifth.

For the girls, Holcomb would win the meet with 33 points, followed by Cimarron with 42 and Scott City had 45. Janae Fugitt from Cimarron was the GWAC champion, while Jenera Ardery from Holcomb was runner-up and Scott City’s Belle Trout placed third. 

Saturday, October 22 is the day for regional cross country. Hugoton and Ulysses will be in the Class 4A Regional at McPherson, while Cimarron, Holcomb, and Scott City will be at the Class 3A Regional in Goodland.
