Scott City splits GWAC triangular with Holcomb, Cimarron

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–All three teams in Thursday’s GWAC triangular at Holcomb High School came away with a win and loss, as Cimarron and Scott City made the trip to Holcomb for a round of league play. The three teams would go 1-1, as Holcomb would sweep Cimarron in the first match of the day 25-16, 25-18, the Bluejays would turn around and sweep Scott City 25-15, 25-19, and in the finale, the Lady Beavers picked up a 25-17, 17-25, 25-22 win over the Lady Longhorns.

Scott City’s first match of the day saw them start out flat, as Cimarron had the early momentum, grabbing a 7-3 lead. The Lady Beavers got to within 7-6 in the opening set, before an 8-1 run pushed the Lady Bluejay lead to 15-7. Cimarron would get their lead to 22-11 and 23-12, before taking the 25-15 win. Scott City played better in the second set, but it was the Lady Bluejays who came out on top. Cimarron started out up 9-5 and 13-8, forcing a Lady Beaver timeout. Scott City would slowly work their way to an 18-17 lead, but the would be the Lady Bluejays, who closed the set and match with an 8-1 run to take the set 25-19 and the match 25-15, 25-19. Avery Lewis had three kills and Kendall Gentry had two service aces for Scott City.

In the finale against, Holcomb, the first two sets would be identical scores, with each team winning a set. The first set would see five ties and three lead changes, which would be early on. Scott City took control in the middle of the opening set, with seven out of nine points to take a 15-10 lead. They went up by as many as seven, before Holcomb got to within 18-14. Slowly, the Lady Beavers closed the set with seven of the final 10 point wo win 25-17. It was the Lady Longhorns who led a majority of the second set. They trailed early on 4-2, when they went on a 6-1 run to lead 8-5. Holcomb led 14-9 in the middle of the set, when Scott City went on a 6-3 run to get to within 17-15. Out of the Lady Longhorn timeout, Holcomb would control the rest of the set with an 8-2 run to take the second set 25-17. In the third set, Scott City never trailed, jumping out to a 5-0 lead, and build their lead to 22-14. The Lady Longhorns fought back, but only got to 24-22 late before the Lady Beavers won the third set 25-22, and the match 25-17, 17-25, 25-22. Hannah Tucker had seven kills, while Megan Trout had six kills and two service aces for Scott City.

Both Holcomb and Scott City are 1-1 in GWAC play, while Cimarron is 1-3. Cimarron and Holcomb will be in the Lakin Invitational on Saturday, while Scott City will host a dual with Southwestern Heights on Tuesday.
