Beavers suffer first loss to Millwood
Oklahoma City, Okla. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers made the nearly 400-mile trip on Friday to Oklahoma City to face the Millwood Falcons in the first-ever meeting of the two schools. Both teams, who have had plenty of success on the gridiron over the years, fought hard to the end. The Falcons would rally for two fourth quarter touchdowns to take a 30-20 win over the Beavers in Scott City’s first football game in the Sooner state.
Scott City would score first, taking advantage of an early Millwood turnover. On fourth and goal from the three, Lawson Bailey would score to give the Beaver the early 7-0 lead after the Aldo Munoz extra point. The Falcons would return the favor and take the lead late in the period. With 27 seconds left in the opening frame, CJ Turnbull connected with Jaden Nickens on a 13-yards pass play for the score. Rickey Hunt, Jr ran in the two-point conversion to give them the 8-7 lead after the first period.
The second quarter was a defensive struggle for both teams, as neither team moved the ball. Scott City would punt and pin Millwood inside their own one yard line. On the very first play of the series, Brady Welker tackled Hunt five yards deep in the end zone for a safety, and the Beavers took a 9-8 lead, which was the score at the break.
In the third quarter, the scoring would come late in the period. Scott City would have their 41-yard field goal blocked earlier in the quarter. Following Millwood’s fourth interception of the game, the Beavers would cash in on an Aldo Munoz 26-yard field goal to extend the lead to 12-8 with 2:29 left in the third period. The Falcons muffed the ensuing kickoff, but got the Beavers out of their kickoff lanes, and made them pay. Hunt, Jr picked up the ball and ran 99 yards for a touchdown to put Millwood up 14-12 with 2:13 left in the third quarter. They missed the two-point conversion.
Early in the fourth quarter, Scott City would retake the lead. One play after a Falcon snap over the punters head that went to the eight yard line, Bailey scored to put the Beavers back up 18-14, and Jace Thomas ran in the two-point conversion to go up 20-14 with 10:02 left. Millwood marched quickly down the field to take the lead. On a third and goal at the 19, it was Turnbull hooking up with Xzavier Thompson from 19 yards out to tie the game at 20 with 7:50 left. Hunt Jr ran in the two-point conversion to give the lead back to the Falcons 22-20. Scott City went three-and-out, and Millwood iced the game with a 10-play, 57-yard drive that ate up nearly four minutes. Hunt Jr scored from eight yards out and scored on the two-point conversion to give the Falcons a two score lead at 30-20 with 2:05 left. The Beavers would turn the ball over, and Millwood ran out the clock to take a 30-20 win.
Freshman quarterback CJ Turnbull was 17-24 passing for 206 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Xzavier Thompson had 91 yards on four receptions and a touchdown, and Jaden Nickens had 84 yards on six receptions and a touchdown. Millwood rushed for just 75 yards.
