Beavers pick up big road win
Wray, Colo. (westernkansasnews.com)–Heading into Friday’s game, Scott City knew they would have a disadvantage on game time this year. Wray had played eight quarters and two games, compared to the Beavers’ one quarter.
The Beavers would put that concern in the rearview early on, and picked up what is perhaps one of their biggest road wins in several years, in a 28-0 dominating win over the No. 2 ranked team in Class 1A in Colorado in the Wray Eagles.
Scott City would take the opening drive six plays and 61 yards for a second consecutive game. This time, they took 2:19 off the clock, as Jace Thomas scored from 36 yards out with 9:41 left in the first quarter to go up 7-0 after the Aldo Munoz PAT. Wray went six plays, before punting, setting up the Beavers at their own 49. They would convert two fourth downs on the drive, and burn up nearly half of the first quarter clock. Brady Welker scored form a yard out on fourth and goal to put the Beavers up 13-0 with 13 seconds left in the opening frame. The extra point was no good.
The Beavers defense shined in the second quarter, winning the field position game, as they forced two three-and-outs and late in the second quarter, Welker would grab an interception on the Eagles’ lone sustained first half drive. Scott City scored with 4:40 left before halftime after setting up shop at the Wray 43. Welker took advantage of a wide open hole and scored from 43 yards to put the Beavers up 19-0. Lawson Bailey ran the two-point conversion in to extend the lead to 21-0. The Beavers had one more chance to score in the red zone at the end of the half, but their 28-yard field goal attempt was blocked.
In the third quarter, Scott City scored on their second possession of the half, going eight plays in 45 yards, as Welker finished the drive with a one yard run. Munoz booted in the extra point kick to make it 28-0 Beavers with 6:12 left in the third frame.
Wray had one long drive in the second half that resulted in a turnover on downs, as they got to the Scott City 31 yard line, before being sacked late in the third quarter.
Both defenses dominated the final period, as the Beavers came out with a big early season win 28-0.
The Beaves finished with with 234 yards on the ground and 282 yards of offense. Brady Welker had a career night, with 118 yards on 17 carries and three scores, while Jace Thomas had 11 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown, Lawson Bailey had five rushes for 31 yards, Griffin Edwards four carries for 18 yards, Dylan Metzger three rushes for eight yards, Alex Tarango four carries for one yard, Collin McDaniel one carry for minus-1 and Camden Vulgamore two for minus-13.
Metzger threw for 48 yards on 7-12 passing. Lawson Bailey had four catches for 20 yards, McDaniel had a 14-yard reception, Avry Noll had one catch for nine yards and Jackson Rumford had a five-yard reception.
Wray was limited to 53 yards on the ground, led by Brady Collins with 23 yards on seven carries, Chris Arambula four for 14 yards, Samuel Meisner had eight carries for 13 yards, Camden Riggleman had three carries for eight yards, and Casey Midcap had eight rushes for minus-five yards.
Midcap was 6-11 passing for 47 yards with an interception, and Austin Collins was 2-5 for seven yards with an interception. Chris Arambula had four catches for 27 yards, Brady Collins 520 for 23, Samuel Meisner one catch for eight yards and Payton Wade had a reception that ended in a four-yard loss. Wray finished with 107 yards of offense.
With the win, Scott City is 2-0 for a second consecutive year, and 13 out of the last 15 seasons. They also improved to 9-1 against teams from Colorado and 2-1 in the all-time series with Wray. The Beavers have shutout their first two opponents 70-0, and it’s the first time since 2018 they’ve started the season with two shutouts.
Scott City will be at Millwood, Okla. next Friday while Wray plays at Ellicott in their final non-league game of the year.
