Area schools compete well at Hesston Swather Special

Hesston, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Several area schools made the trip to Hesston on Thursday for the annual Hesston Swather Special that features schools from all six classifications in Kansas. Classes 1-3A were in the small division and 4-6A competed in the large division. Garden City was in the large division while Cimarron, Holcomb, Meade and Scott City from the area were in the small division.

The races were run by grade, as freshmen girls and boys were followed by sophomore girls and boys races, all the way to the seniors.

Garden City would sweep both the boys and girls team races in the large division. The Lady Buffaloes edged Hays by two points to win, while the boys WAC rival Liberal for the boys crown.

In the small division, the Holcomb and Scott City teams would have good showings. On the boys side, Holcomb would be in second place with 24 points and Scott City was third with 34 points. Meade cracked the top 10 with a sixth place finish. Berean Academy won the boys race with 11 points. In the girls race, Holcomb was fifth with 20 points and Scott City had 28 points in eighth place. Smoky Valley won the girls race with 13 points. 

Several area runners won their classification. For Garden City, Devin Chappel won the senior, Josiah Munoz the junior, Hayden Nemechek the sophomore, and winning the freshman boys division was Uriel Gurrola. Lady Buff senior Jocelyn Sosa won the senior large division. In the small division, Meade’s Logan Keith won the junior race, and Holcomb’s Brody Deniston was the freshman winner. There were no area senior boys in the small division. For the small division girls, Meade’s Madison Sutterfield was the senior champion, and Jenna Ardery of Holcomb won the sophomore race.

The top five placers and times from each division counted for the teams, with the exception of the girls small division, where the top three only counted toward team points.
