Scott City volleyball splits home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After a tough Tuesday, the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team returned home for a triangular on Thursday afternoon against a pair of Mid-Continent League schools in Hill City and Hoxie. While the Lady Beavers would split the triangular, the Lady Beavers showed that they have continued to make strides throughout the season. Scott City would drop a competitive match to Hoxie to begin the day 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, and took down Hill City in the finale 25-16, 25-19. The Lady Indians would sweep Hill City in the second match.
Against Hoxie, the match would be a back and forth affair between a pair of evenly-matched teams. The match saw 18 ties and 13 lead changes. In the first set, Scott City led 11-10 before a Lady Indian rally of 8-2 to give Hoxie the 18-13 advantage. The Lady Beavers rallied and got to within one on two occasions late in the set, with the last coming at 21-20. Hoxie closed the set with four straight to win 25-20. Scott City also led near the midway point of the second set at 11-10, before a Lady Indian run of six straight to take a 16-11 lead. Hoxie led 23-19, when the Lady Beavers got a spark at the net with a pair of Brooke Strine block points, and closed the set with six straight to win 25-23, forcing a third set. In the third set, Hoxie took an 11-7 lead, only to see Scott City come back and tie the set at 14 apiece. However, the Lady Beavers were unable to regain the lead until they took a 21-20 lead. The Lady Indians put together five straight points to close the set out at 25-21, and take the match 25-20, 23-25, 25-21. Megan Trout had eight kills, while Brooke Strine had six kills and three block points and Avery Lewis had five kills.
Hill City would be their final opponent of the night, and Scott City would jump out early and stun the Lady Ringnecks. The Lady Beavers started off attacking early and often, and had a pair of service aces to help them get out to an early 14-2 lead. Hill City would rally and eventually got to within 19-14, but Scott City would take advantage of a service error and pick up six of the final eight points to take the opening set 25-16. Hill City would have the momentum in set two, in a set that saw seven ties and five lead changes. They jumped out to the early 3-0 lead, and led 10-7, before the Lady Beavers came back to grab an 11-10 lead. It would go back and forth throughout most of the second set. Tied at 15, Scott City separated themselves from the Lady Ringnecks and went on a 7-1 run to go up 22-16, forcing Hill City to burn both timeouts during that stretch. Hill City got to within 23-19, only to see the Lady Beavers pick up the final two points to take the set 25-19, and win the match 25-16, 25-19. Megan Trout had eight kills, while Avery Lewis added six kills and Dayanara Castillo had four kills. Kendall Gentry had two of Scott City’s four service aces for the Lady Beavers.
Scott City is now 4-8 on the year, and will have a week off, before traveling to Colby next Thursday for a triangular with Colby and Hoxie.
