Garden City flexes its muscles in a complete win vs. Wichita Heights
Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com) – Weather couldn’t stop the Buffaloes from capturing a week one win on Friday night in their season opener vs. Wichita Heights.
After an intense first half that saw Ryan Heiman score the first touchdown of the game on a 94-yard pick-six and the Buffaloes rumble in two more scores on the ground. Mother nature had something to say and she was loud. The moment the first half ended the game was placed into a weather delay as wind, rain, and lightning came in quick over Buffalo Stadium.
The game would be delayed 150 minutes and the official kickoff for the 2nd half didn’t resume until 11 pm CT. The ball was wet and both teams came out slippery but ultimately Garden City was able to hold on thanks to some timely defense and a final drive that saw the Buffaloes eat up almost 6 minutes of the game clock. The drive was capped off with a Caleb Wiese 1 yard QB sneak for the final Buffaloes touchdown of the night. The game officially ended at 12:08 am on Saturday morning as the Buffaloes were a week one winner even if they had to wait a little longer than they would have liked. Garden City 36 Wichita Heights 26 and the Buffaloes had their week one win in hand.
Some standout’s from the stat sheet for the night included, running back Zack Keosengphet who ran for 60 yds and 2 TDs, as well as Caleb Wiese who played both sides of the ball and recorded 11 solo tackles and 3 tackles for a loss. Jerry Artega recorded 1 catch for 55 yards and was consistently creating an edge as a lead blocker.
Garden City will be back at Wichita North (0-1) on Friday with kickoff slated for 7 pm. The game will be played at Wichita Heights high school.
