Lady Beaver volleyball splits home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team kicked off their home slate Thursday in a triangular with Goodland and Wichita County. Scott City would earn a split, as they fell to Goodland 25-14, 25-15, and picked up a win in the nightcap 25-18, 19-25, 25-20. Goodland would take down Wichita County in two sets.
Against the Cowgirls, the Lady Beavers hung tough, playing without senior Hannah Tucker due to an injury. Scott City was unable to tie or lead in the match. Leading 4-3 in the opening set, the Cowgirls started their run and took a 14-7 lead, forcing a Lady Beaver timeout. The No. 5 team in Class 3A closed out the set with seven of the final eight points to take it 25-14. Goodland picked up from where they left off in set two, racing out to a 13-4 lead, and grew the lead to 196. Scott City fought back, and used a 8-2 run to get to within 21-14, before the Cowgirls went on to win 25-15, and win the match 25-14, 25-15. Avery Lewis had six kills, while Megan Trout added five and Brooke Strine had three kills.
In the finale against Wichita County, Scott City never trailed in the first and third sets. The Lady Beavers opened up a 6-2 lead in the first set, while the Lady Indians would battle back to within 7-5. Midway through the first set, Scott City used a 7-2 run to build a lead of 18-12. The Lady Indians could get no closer than six as the Lady Beavers took a 25-18 opening set victory. In set two, it was a back and forth affair, as there were 11 ties and six lead changes. Wichita County led 6-4, before a run of 7-2 put Scott City up 11-9. Trailing 12-10, the Lady Indians scored six of the next eight to lead 16-14. After the Lady Beavers tied it at 18, Wichita County took the momentum, closing the set with seven of the final eight points to win 25-19. In set three, it looked like it was going to be a complete runway for Scott City. They stormed out to a 12-1 lead, only to see the Lady Indians respond with an 9-2 run to get to within 14-10, including six straight. The Lady Beavers pushed the lead to 20-13, before Wichita County rallied all the way back to within 22-20. Following the Scott City timeout, the Lady Beavers finished things with three straight to close out the match, with a 25-20 set three win, and a 25-18, 19-25, 25-20 win. Brooke Strine had four kills and a pair of block points, while Avery Lewis had two service aces and Dayanara Castillo had three kills in the win.
Scott City is now 3-6 on the year, and will play at Ulysses in a dual on Tuesday.
