Lady Beaver softball wins two in Hugoton

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was the regular season finale for both Hugoton and Scott City on Tuesday, as the Eagles played host to the Lady Beavers in GWAC play. Scott City would clinch the league title outright, and complete a doubleheader sweep, as they picked up wins of 14-0 and 18-4.

In the 14-0 win in five innings, Scott City scored five runs in the first inning, and put the game away with a six-run fifth inning for the win. Tori Ford would go 2-4 with three RBI in the game, while Melany Duff and Mackayla Miller each had three hits for the Lady Beavers. Cheyenne Cramer pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10 in five innings on 63 pitches. The only Hugoton runner on the bases was a hit by pitch.

The second game would also last five innings, where the Lady Beavers won 18-4. Scott City scored three in the first, and six in the second inning to take a 9-0 lead. Hugoton added two runs in the bottom of the second, only to see the Lady Beavers counter with seven runs in the third inning and add two more in the fourth. The Lady Eagles scored two in the bottom of the third. Amber Latta and Rhiley Stoppel each had two hits and four RBI in the victory, while Malorie Cupp had four hits in the win. Scott City finished with 18 hits in game two. Cheyenne Cramer gave up four runs on five hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work.

Scott City finishes 12-0 in GWAC play, and 17-1 overall, while Hugoton drops to 8-12 overall, and 3-9 in conference play.

Next week is regionals in Ingalls, hosted by Cimarron. Scott City will be the top seed and will take on Lakin unofficially, while Holcomb will be the second seed, followed by Cimarron/Ingalls, Haskell County, Goodland. Depending on Tuesday’s outcome, Southwestern Heights and Hugoton will be the six or seven seed.
