Lady Beaver softball splits with Liberal

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On one of the best days to play softball this spring, Scott City wrapped up their home schedule with a doubleheader against Liberal on Thursday. The big crowd on hand would be treated to a pair of good games that would be decided by one run, as the Lady Beavers rallied to take the first game 8-7, while the Lady Redskins rallied to win game two 7-6 in 10 innings.

Scott City got the scoring going in the bottom of the first on a two-run triple by Malorie Cupp. In the top of the second, Liberal rallied with four runs, highlighted by a Maedeen McClure, two run single to give them a 3-2 lead at the time. Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the second, the Lady Beavers took advantage of four Redskin errors in the inning to retake the lead 5-4. They added to their lead in the third, when Tori Ford hit her first home run of the year on a full count to make it 6-4. However, Liberal tied the game on a RBI single by Jenna Ormiston in the top of the fourth inning. In the next inning, McClure singled in Lizzy Cisneros to give them the lead back at 7-6. The Lady Beavers took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Redskin error, as two runs scored to make it 8-7. Liberal had two on in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t get a run home, as Scott City rallied for the win. 

Cheyenne Cramer got the win for Scott City, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts. Tori Ford, Malorie Cupp and Melany Duff each had a hit and an RBI in the game. 
Maedeen McClure had three hits and three RBI for Liberal. Jenna Ormiston went six innings and took the loss, giving up eight runs, two earned, on five hits with a strikeout. Liberal had eight errors in the game.

The finale of the evening would be a classic, and needed a few extra innings in the process. Much like the first game, Scott City got two runs in the bottom of the first. Malorie Cupp had a RBI double, and scored on a wild pitch. Liberal bounced back with two runs in the top of the third with a pair of hits, capped off by the Jaciana Rivera’s RBI triple to tie the game. Cheyenne Cramer gave the Lady Beavers the lead back in the bottom of the frame, scoring Amber Latta on a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Scott City extended their lead on a Melany Duff two-run single, after PJ Suppes singled in a run. Trailing 6-2 in the fifth, the Redskins picked up a run and in the sixth, Amya Blake’s three-run double tied the game at six. On the throw in, Blake would be tagged out out at the plate, that preserved the tie at the time. Both teams had their chances in the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn’t get a run across the plate. It would remain scoreless until the top of the 10th, when Liberal scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 7-6. Scott City had a runner on in the bottom of the 10th, but were retired, as the Lady Beavers dropped their first game of the year. 

Zoey Torres got the win, going all 10 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Amya Blake had three hits and drove in three runs. Cheyenne Cramer took the loss, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits, with nine strikeouts. Melany Duff had two hits and drove in two runs, while Mackayla Miller had two hits, and PJ Suppes and Malorie Cupp had two hits with a run driven in.

Scott City is 15-1 overall, and will wrap up their regular season on May 10 at Hugoton, while Liberal is 8-5 and hosts Great Bend for a doubleheader on Friday.
