Fire under investigation after triple story complex goes up in flames in Garden City
GARDEN CITY, KAN (WesternKansasNews.Com) – At approximately 4:32 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 2808 N. Taylor Plaza. Upon arrival, fire personnel observed heavy smoke and fire coming from a second story window. GCFD personnel made entry and encountered overwhelming heat and smoke conditions. It was determined by Command that due to high heat and deteriorating structural condition, it was unsafe for interior operations and an evacuation order was mandated. Fire personnel then transitioned to a defensive fire attack due to the amount of fire and presumed condition of the structure. After the majority of the fire was extinguished, fire personnel were able to transition back into interior operations of salvage and overhaul. During the second entry phase, fire personnel found that the fire had caused the second and third floors to collapse.
The fire was deemed under control at 6:52 p.m. In total, one Tower, one Ladder, two Engines, two Tanker trucks, and three Command vehicles responded to fight the fire. Multiple master streams and handlines were used to bring the fire under control. This fire is still under investigation and the cause has yet to be determined. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office was notified of the fire and has been requested to assist with the investigation. No injuries were reported, and no damage estimates for the structure are known at this time.
