Scott City softball takes two from Goodland

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City had a big day in front of them on Tuesday, as they played host to the Goodland Cowgirls. Goodland entered with plenty of momentum, riding a five-game win streak. The Lady Beavers had not swept the Cowgirls in a double header as well. In the end, it would be a big day for Scott City, as they picked up wins on 10-3 and 10-0, clinching at least a share of the GWAC title.

Not only were both teams battling strong winds again, they had a hard time adjusting to the strike zone early on. Even though Goodland did not have a hit in the opening inning, they scored two runs, thanks to five walks in the top of the frame. Scott City tied the game on a passed ball and a misplay by the Cowgirls in the bottom of the first inning. They would tack on four more in the first, thanks to a Rhiley Stoppel triple and PJ Suppes RBI single that gave the Lady Beavers a 6-2 lead. Jaxi Mitchek pulled Goodland to within 6-3 in the top of the second on an RBI single, only to see Scott City tack on two more runs in the bottom of the frame. In the third, the Lady Beavers got a Cheyenne Cramer RBI double and a Mackayla Miller RBI ground out to end the scoring. Both teams saw their defenses step up over the remainder of the game, as the final would be 10-3.

Cheyenne Cramer had 13 strikeouts, and gave up three runs on two hits in seven innings of work. She walked six, with just one after the first inning. Rhiley Stoppel drove in two runs and had two hits for the Lady Beavers. Jaxi Mitchek gave up 10 runs, three earned, on six hits in six innings of work. She had one hit and drove in a run.

The finale was controlled throughout by the Lady Beavers, as they took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, thanks to a Malorie Cupp RBI single and a RBI groundout by Cheyenne Cramer. Following a scoreless second inning, Scott City opened the game up in the third with seven runs. Tori Ford drove in two runs with a double, and PJ Suppes, Hannah Tucker each had RBI doubles, as they took a 9-0 lead into the fourth. Amber Latta would end a Goodland threat in the fourth with a double play, and Scott City closed the game out with a Latta RBI single in the fifth inning to win by run rule 10-0. 

Amber Latta, Malorie Cupp, and Tori Ford each had two hits and two RBI in the contest, as the Lady Beavers had 10 hits. Cheyenne Cramer gave up two infield singles in the win, as she struck out four in just 52 pitches used. Allison Daise took the loss, giving up 10 runs, seven earned, on 10 hits, with a strikeout in four and a third-plus innings in the circle. Haley Biermann and Hannah Coumerlih each had a hit for the Cowgirls.

With the win, Scott City continues their best start in school history, improving to 14-0 overall and clinched a share of the GWAC title by improving to 10-0 in league play. Goodland is 7-5 overall, 4-4 in league play. Scott City hosts Liberal to close out their home slate on Thursday, while Goodland plays at Russell.
