Scott City baseball splits with Spearville, tennis wins Ellsworth Invite

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday saw a busy day for Scott City, as the baseball team made the trip to Spearville to face the Lancers, while tennis opened their season at Ellsworth. The Beaver baseball team would split the doubleheader, winning 18-1 in six innings, and fell 3-1 in the nightcap, while the boys tennis picked up their first tournament win of the year in the opening meet of the year.

In Spearville, Scott City took advantage of 18 walks in the game. The Lancers led 1-0 through two innings, before the Beavers took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, two in the fourth, and opened the game up with a five-run fourth inning and an eight-run sixth inning to make the score 18-1. Scott City had six hits in the game, as Aaron Ruelas had two hits and four RBI, while JP Harris had three hits and drove in three runs. Brady Welker went all six innings to pick up the win, scattering three hits with 13 strikeouts. The second game saw the Beavers lead 1-0 in the top of the first, but Spearville scored a run in the first, second and fifth to take the 3-1 victory. Lawson Bailey had a hit and an RBI in the loss, and on the mound, he went six innings, giving up three runs on 11 hits and had seven strikeouts. Spearville outhit Scott City 11-4 in the second game. Up next is a home doubleheader against Holcomb on Tuesday.

At Ellsworth, the Scott City tennis team set the tone for the season with a tournament title at the Ellsworth Invitational. The Beaver won the meet with 64 points, while Trego was second with 52 and Colby was third with 44 points. Taking home first place was Avry Noll at No. 1 Singles, Dylan Duff at No. 2 Singles and the No. 2 Doubles team of Kalo Hineman/Eric Shapland. The No. 1 Doubles team of Houston Frank/Sage Stoecklein finished third. They will travel to the Great Bend Invitational on Saturday and host the Scott City Invitational on Thursday, April 7.
