Lady Beavers end their season at TMP
Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night’s sub-state quarterfinal between Scott City and Thomas More Prep-Marian saw two old MSAA teams face off for the first time in six years. It would be a sluggish start for both teams, as the lead would be exchanged four times in the first six minutes. The Lady Monarchs would force four straight turnovers and turn each turnover into points, and advanced to Friday’s sub-state semi-final with a 59-24 victory inside Al Billinger Fieldhouse.
TMP scored the first three points of the game, as it would go back and forth through most of the opening eight minutes. Scott City led 6-5 with just under two minutes remaining in the first period, and then turnovers started piling up, as the Lady Monarchs scored 11 straight to lead 16-6 early in the second quarter. When the dust settled, TMP-Marian had a 20-3 run to go up 25-9 with 3:49 left before halftime.
Scott City hit five of eight free throws in the second eight minutes, and trailed 25-13 with under two minutes left before the halftime break. The Lady Monarchs drained a three late in the half and took a 28-13 halftime lead. That sparked a 13-0 run that put them up 38-13 with 5:43 left in period three. It would be a little over a 10 and a half minute field goal drought for the Lady Beavers, as they were unable to get a run in the second half, as they watched TMP grow their lead to 48-21 heading into the final frame.
The Lady Monarchs went up 52-21, two minutes in the the fourth period that forced a continuous clock, and ended up with the 59-24 win.
Leading the way for TMP-Marian would be Jaci VonLintel with 11 points, while Emilee Lane and Kassidi Yost added 10. Scott City got eight points from Brooke Strine.
With the win, TMP is now 4-0 against Scott City in sub-state play. It was their first postseason meeting since 1994. They also have now won 13 straight in the series and lead the series 30-11. The Lady Beavers lost their first sub-state quarterfinal game since 2015, and broke a streak of six straight years with at least one postseason win.
Four Lady Beavers played their final game in Ella Rumford, Amber Latta, Tori Ford and Alli Patton.

TMP-Marian will play Phillipsburg in the 6 pm game on Friday in Goodland. The Lady Panthers scored with eight seconds left to defeat Colby 60-58 on Tuesday in Phillipsburg. The Lady Monarchs and Phillipsburg have split this year. Goodland will face Hoisington on Friday night at 7:30, as the Cowgirls dominated Norton 73-28, and the Lady Cardinals hung on for a 47-43 home win over Russell.
