Beavers split with Goodland
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night had many implications on sub-state seeding for both Scott City and Goodland, as both schools were looking to improve their position in the regular season finale. It would end up being a split in the double header, as the Cowgirls took a 58-40 win, while the Beaver boys picked up a 44-31 victory. The regular season finale for Scott City was also their Senior Night.
Goodland Girls 58, Scott City 40
The No. 6 team in Class 3A would find themselves down early to the upset-minded Lady Beavers. Scott City came out strong early and led 10-2 with 4:38 left in the first quarter. Following a Goodland timeout, the Cowgirls would use an 11-2 run to take a 13-12 lead, only to see the Lady Beavers regain the lead 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. Goodland hit a three to open the second quarter, which sparked a 19-5 run over the first six-plus minutes, and took a 32-25 halftime lead. Another Cowgirl run of 10-1 put them up 42-26 with 3:20 left in the third frame, and it would be their defense that carried them the rest of the way. Goodland led 45-30 heading into the final quarter, as Scott City tried to play catch up in the final quarter, only to see the Cowgirls deny them a run. The biggest lead for Goodland was at 58-36 with 1:16 left, before the Lady Beavers scored the final points of the game to make it 58-40.
Lindsay Cure led Goodland with 16 points, while Talexa Weeter had 11 and Olivia Lehman scored 10 off the bench. Scott City got 16 from Amber Latta on Senior Night, followed by Erika Felker with 14.
Goodland has now won four straight in the series, the longest since 2015-17, and now holds a 36-30 series lead since 1981.

Scott City Boys 44, Goodland 31
For a second straight game, Scott City would never trail, but they were unable to get separation from the Cowboys. The Beavers would start out scoring the games first 11 points, and took an 11-3 lead into the second quarter. While the shooting was tough, Scott City was able to maintain the lead, as Goodland would inch close in the second stanza, outscoring the Beavers 11-9 to pull to within 20-14 at the break. Following a Cowboy basket to begin the second half, Scott City would turn things up on the defense, which translated into offense, and scored six straight to lead 26-16, just 71 seconds into the third quarter. The Beavers led by 12 late in the third quarter, before a Goodland three pointer put them to within nine at 32-23 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final eight minutes, Scott City saw their lead shrink to seven with 3:22 left at 38-31. However, the Beavers would drain four straight free throws, and get a late second basket to pull away for the 44-31 win, which was their largest lead of the night.
Gus Hawkins led Scott City with 11 points, while Goodland’s Noah Shinette had 16.
Scott City has now won four straight in the series, 16 of the last 18 games, and holds a 41-29 lead since 1979.

Scott City’s girls will be the seventh seed, and play at TMP-Marian, the second seed, on Tuesday, March 1, at 6 pm. Scott City boys were in a three-way tie with Russell and Phillipsburg for the third through fifth seeds, but ended up getting the fifth seed, as they will be at Russell on Monday, February 28, at 6 pm. Goodland’s boys will play at top seed TMP-Marian on Monday at 6 pm CT, and the Cowgirls are the top seed in sub-state, as they will host Norton on Tuesday at 6 pm CT.
