Hugoton takes two from Scott City

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It took nearly three weeks for the final matchup of the year between Hugoton and Scott City to take place. Monday night, the two schools met up at Hugoton High School in GWAC play. The night would go in favor of the homestanding Eagles, as the Lady Eagles pulled away in the final period for a 59-36 win, while the Hugoton boys would pick up a 64-42 win.

The No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A never trailed, but could not put Scott City away early on. Hugoton would build an 11-4 lead after the first quarter, and saw the Lady Beavers storm back to make it 12-11 with a little over five minutes left in the opening half. A 10-5 Lady Eagle run gave them a 22-16 halftime lead. After Scott City hit an early free throw to get to within five early in the third stanza, Hugoton used a 9-2 run over the next 90 seconds to take a 31-19 lead midway through the third period. The Lady Beavers had one big push left in them with a 9-2 run to counter and got to within 33-28 late in the third quarter. However, Hugoton would get hot from the field and closed the final 8:43 of the game on a 26-8 run to pull away for the 59-36 win. 

Summya Adigun led the Lady Eagles with 18 points, while Mikyn Hamlin had 16 and Gianna Vos added 11, as they won their seventh straight game. Scott City saw Alli Patton tie a career-high with 13 points, as the Lady Beavers have dropped two straight GWAC games. 

Hugoton has now won six straight in the series, and leads the series 27-12 since 1989.

Hugoton would feast on Scott City turnovers throughout most of the night, as they never trailed despite being tied at three early on. The Eagles lead early 13-5, before five straight by the Beavers pulled them to within 13-10 after eight minutes of play. Hugoton pushed their lead back up to 13-15 with 4:11 left before halftime, only to see Scott City score the next six points to make it 23-21 with 2:34 remaining before recess. The Eagles would close the half on a 10-0 run, and score the first six points of the second half to take a 39-23 lead with 6:41 left in the third frame. In all, it was a 20-3 run as the led 43-24 with 3:48 left in the third quarter. A late 5-0 run got the Beavers to within 48-34 late in the third quarter, but Hugoton scored the final basket to take a 50-34 lead into the final stanza. In the fourth, the No. 9 team in Class 3A would outscore Scott City 14-8, en route to the 64-42 win. 

Ryle Riddlesperger led the way for the Eagles with 18 points on six three’s, while Carson Bennett added 17 and Dasean Lewis finished with 11 points, as Hugoton has now won 10 straight. Scott City got 13 from Gus Hawkins and 10 from Ronnie Weathers. The Beavers are in the midst of their toughest stretch of the season, and have now dropped three straight. 

Hugoton has now won 10 of the last 14 games, but Scott City leads the series 19-18 since 1989.
