Holcomb wins two in Scott City
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday night’s games between Holcomb and Scott City were not only big games for the GWAC standings, but also fore each team in their sub-state standings. While both schools are in different sub-states, they are still in the running for higher seeds. It would be a sweep for the Longhorns, as the girls pulled away in the fourth quarter in a 44-31 win, while the boys started out hot from the field en route to a 58-42 win.
Holcomb Girls 44, Scott City 31
Holcomb came out shooting well early, while Scott City struggled. The Lady Longhorns had a 9-0 run in the first half to lead 14-3, seconds into the second quarter. A run of 11-2 by the Lady Beavers put them back in the game, as they got to within 16-14 with 1:53 left before the break. Holcomb converted three free throws in the final seconds of the half to build a 19-14 lead at intermission. They continued their lead, leading by as many as seven at 25-18 with 5:57 left in the third frame. Scott City made their run, with a 10-2 run to take their first and only lead of the night at 28-27 with 46 seconds left in the third quarter. Holcomb would take the lead late in the third frame, and outscore the Lady Beavers 15-3 in the final period to pick up a 44-31 win.
Jera Kruleski led the way with 17 points for Holcomb, as they have now won two straight. Scott City saw their two-game win streak snapped, as they got 10 points from Erika Felker.
Holcomb now leads the all-time series 32-27, as they completed a sweep of Scott City for the first time since the 2015 season.

Holcomb Boys 58, Scott City 42
For Scott City early on, it felt like it was deja vu all over again from their second half of Tuesday night’s game against Lakin. The No. 9 ranked team in Class 3A Holcomb started out hot shooting, and it would prove to be too much for Scott City to overcome. Holcomb started out of the gates leading 8-0, and pushed their lead to 19-8 after the opening period. After a Beaver bucket made it 19-10 early in the second period, as the Longhorns scored the next 13 points to lead 32-10 with three minutes left in the half. Scott City scored four of the final five points of the half, all at the line, as they trailed 33-14 at the break. The Longhorns never saw their lead dip any lower than 13 in the second half, as they led 42-25 after the third quarter, and settled for the 58-42 win.
Cooper Autry led Holcomb with 22 points, while Daegan VanPelt added 13 for Holcomb, who has won three straight. Scott City got 14 from Austin Thon and 13 from Gus Hawkins.
Holcomb has now won four straight in the series, and swept Scott City for a second straight year. The Beavers do hold a 32-30 lead in the all-time series.
