Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two GWAC schools battled on Friday night as Scott City traveled to Ulysses to take on the Tigers in GWAC doubleheader. The night would be slanted toward the Beavers in a big way, as the Scott City girls picked up a 63-21 win, while the Beaver boys won 64-34.

Early on, it felt like the Lady Beavers were able to take out their frustrations after a tough January on Ulysses. The game was tied early on at two, when Scott City scored the next 25 points and never looked back. They led 25-2 after the first quarter and led 27-2 early in the second period, and would eventually expand their lead to 40-8 at the break, ending the half with eight straight. Scott City outscored the Lady Tigers in each quarter, with an 11-9 third quarter run to take a 51-17 lead into the fourth. It would be a continuous clock in the final period. After Ulysses made it 54-21 early in the final period, Scott City closed the game with nine straight for the 63-21 victory.

Amber Latta lead the way for Scott City with 13 points, while Alli Patton added 11, as nine Lady Beavers scored. Ulysses got eight points from Dalia Garcia, as they dropped their eighth straight game of the season. 

Scott City has now won six straight in the series, the longest since 2002-2004, and the 42-point margin is the widest by either side since at least 1980. The lead the series with Ulysses 49-37 since 1980

Ulysses grabbed the early lead at 2-0, only to see Scott City score eight straight and never looked back. The Tigers would hang in early on, pulling to within 12-9 with two minutes left in the opening frame. After the Beavers scored the final five points of the quarter, they started the second period with a 21-2 run to lead 38-11 with 2:57 remaining before halftime. They eventually took a 42-18 halftime lead. Ulysses scored the opening basket of the second half to make it 42-21, but the Beavers responded with a 9-3 run of their own and eventually le 53-28 heading into the fourth. Scott City forced a continuous clock with five straight to open the fourth period, and led by as many as 32, before settling for a 64-34 win. 

Scott City had three in double figures, led by Gus Hawkins with 22 points, followed by Lawson Bailey with 13 and Ronnie Weathers with 10 off the bench, as they have started 2-0 in GWAC play for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Adrian Sifuentes led Ulysses with nine points, as they have dropped 10 straight games. 

Scott City has now won eight of the last 10 in the series, and holds a 59-25 advantage since 1980. It was the biggest win in the series for the Beavers since their 81-50 win in 2015.

Scott City will return home for two straight games next week, as they host Lakin on Tuesday and Holcomb on Friday. Ulysses visits Holcomb on Tuesday, before playing host to Cimarron next Friday.
