Scott City and Cimarron split GWAC doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday night’s doubleheader between Scott City and Cimarron would be the second and final matchup of the season, as the Beavers played host to the Bluejays in GWAC play. Like the first meeting December 14, it would be a split at the Scott Community Events Center, as Cimarron took the girls game 50-46, while the Beaver boys picked up a 62-42 victory.

While the game was back and forth for the first two-plus quarters, the Lady Bluejays did just enough to win. Scott City went on a 12-3 run over a four-minute stretch in the opening period to take a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. They scored six straight in the second quarter to go up 22-15 with 3:38 left before the break, only to see Cimarron score the final eight points of the half to lead 23-22. Both teams would exchange the lead in the first two minutes of the second half, when the Lady Bluejays used a 14-4 run to lead 37-28 with 2:07 left in the third frame. The Lady Beavers pulled to within 37-34 in the opening seconds of the final stanza, only to watch Cimarron extend their lead to 44-37 with 3:18 left. Scott City wasn’t quite done. A 9-2 run by the Lady Beavers tied the game up at 46 with 40 seconds left. The Lady Bluejays would break the full court pressure, and an Emily Acton layup with 29 seconds left put Cimarron up 48-46. Scott City missed a shot, and McKayla Miller drained two late free throws to ice the game, as the Lady Bluejays would come out with the 50-46 win.

McKayla Miller led the way for Cimarron with 20 points. Scott City got 16 from Brooke Strine, 14 by Amber Latta and 11 from Erika Felker.

Scott City dips below .500 for the first time this year, and have lost five straight to Cimarron. The Lady Bluejays lead the series 15-9.

Cimarron would lead early, then Scott City took over and never looked back. Trailing 9-4 midway through the opening period, Scott City would capture the lead and never look back. a 13- 2 run over the final 3:21 of the opening quarter gave the Beavers a 17-11 lead after one period. They led by nine in the opening seconds of second quarter, before the Bluejays mad a run at their deficit. A 10-4 run pulled them to 24-41 with about four minutes left before halftime. The Beavers would push their lead out eventually to a 30-23 halftime lead. Cimarron would once again pull to within four in the first minute of the second quarter at 30-26, only to see Scott City take the game over and never really look back. A 16-2 Beaver run over the next four and a half minutes stretch the lead to 46-27 with 2:17 left in the third quarter. In the final period, Cimarron would get as close as 13 at 48-35 early in the fourth, and Scott City closed the game out on a 10-4 run in the final two minutes to pick up the 62-42 win.

Gus Hawkins led Scott City with 17 points, while Lawson Bailey had 14, including 12 consecutive in the first quarter, and Austin Thon added 13. Cimarron got 20 from Braxton Harrison and 10 from Lane Beery. Both teams entered the game winning two straight games.

Scott City is now 17-1 in the all-time series over Cimarron, winning the last two games. They finished January with a 5-2 record.

Scott City will be on the road for two games next week, with a trip to Hays on Tuesday, and Ulysses on Friday. Cimarron hosts Sublette on Tuesday and Lakin on Friday.
