Scott City splits doubleheader at Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City made the trip to Goodland on Tuesday to begin a busy month of basketball. With nearly half of their games, the Beavers were looking to get things off to a good start. It would be a split in the doubleheader, as the Cowgirls held on for a 43-40 win, while the Scott City boys dominated the second half in a 61-34 win.

While the three ties and two lead changers were early on, the Cowgirls would lead for a big chunk of the night. Scott City struggled shooting early on, going on a 9:13 scoring drought in the first half, but were within striking distance. Goodland led 9-6 after the first quarter, and ended their run at 11 straight at 15-6 midway through the second frame. The Lady Beavers showed life toward the end of the first half, and trailed 23-15 at the break. In the second half, Scott City used a 10-3 run over the first seven minutes to get to within 26-25 in the final minute of the period. Fouls would be a factor in the second half, as they committed 10 fouls in the third frame alone. Goodland struggled at times at the line, and would use a 10-2 run to lead 36-27 with 5:29 left. The Lady Beavers found a way to claw back in once again, getting to within 36-35 with 3:32 left. Scott City also got to within 41-40 late, and trailed 43-40. Their game-tying three was off, and the Cowgirls rebounded and ran out the clock to pick up the win.

Goodland, ranked third in Class 3A, was led by Talexa Weeter with 17 points, and Emma Lehman added 10. Erika Felker had 14 and Amber Latta had 11 to lead Scott City.

With the win, Goodland has won three straight and four of the last five games. The win streak is their longest since 2016-17. The Cowgirls lead the series 35-30 since 1981.

The first eight minutes of play saw three ties and four lead changes, while the final three quarters saw big runs. Scott City would take a 13-12 lead after the first quarter, only to see Goodland continue their solid three point shooting in the first half, as they scored the first six points of the second period to lead 18-13 with 6:19 left in the first half. The Beavers would rally for seven straight to go up 20-19, only to see the Cowboys score the next 10 points to grab their largest lead of the night at 28-20 with a little over two minutes left before halftime. After that, Scott City dominated and dominated in a big way. The Beavers closed out the final 99 seconds of the half with six straight to pull to within 28-26 at the break. They would go on to score the first 10 points of the second half, and used a 19-2 third quarter run to lead 45-30 heading into the fourth quarter. Scott City would dominate the fourth quarter with a 16-4 run, shutting out Goodland in the final 5:41 of the game, en route to the 61-34 win. When it was all said and done, the Beavers closed the final 17:39 of the game on a 41-6 run.

Gus Hawkins led Scott City with 15 points and Dylan Metzger added 10. Leading Goodland was Manny Gonzalez and Noah Shinette with 12 points apiece.

With the win, the Beavers have won three straight in the series, and lead the series 40-29 since 1979. They’ve also won 15 of the last 17 games in the series. Scott City has hit 60 points for the second time in three years.
