Scott City splits with Colby in final games before the break

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)-In their final games before the Christmas break on Friday, Scott City and Colby faced off for the first of two scheduled meetings this year. Both games would be well-contested games, as neither game saw a lead into double digits. The Lady Beavers would take the girls game 42-38, while the Eagle boys escaped with a 43-40 win.

The first game of the night featured plenty of runs by both teams. In the end, Scott City had the last big surge which proved to be the difference. Colby used a 7-0 run to take a 12-7 lead after the first frame, before the Lady Beavers went on a 10-2 run to lead 17-12 midway through the second period. Trailing 18-13, the Lady Eagles went on a 9-2 run over the final 1:29 of the first half, and took a 21-20 lead at the break. Scott City scored the first six points of the second half, only to see Colby use an 8-2 run to lead 29-28 heading into the fourth stanza. When it looked like the Lady Eagles would take control of the game at 33-30 with a little over five minutes left, it would be the Lady Beavers grabbing the momentum. Scott City scored nine consecutive points over a three minute stretch to lead 39-33 with 18 seconds left. That was the largest lead of the night by either side. Colby rallied to pull to within 40-38 with seven seconds remaining, but the Lady Beavers would hit two free throws to pick up a big win.

Scott City was led by Amber Latta and Erika Felker, who each poured in 10 points. Colby got 17 from Alisabeth Barton and 15 from Brooklyn Jones.

With the win, Scott City snapped not only a two-game streak in the series, but also a two-game losing skid to Colby at home. Since 1980, Colby leads the series 55-18.

The final game of the night would see just two ties and five lead changes. It would be the Eagles who would get the final push to pick up a win. Both teams were tied at nine through the first eight minutes of play. Scott City never trailed in the second quarter, and built a 23-16 lead with 2:21 left before the break. Colby responded with six straight to pull to within 23-22 at the break. They scored the first six points of the second half to cap off their 12-0 run to lead 28-23 with 5:31 left in the third quarter. A drought of over four and a half minutes was ended by the Beavers, as they closed the final half of the third stanza with a 10-2 run to lead 33-30 heading into the final quarter. Scott City scored the first points of the final period to lead 35-30 with 5:18 left. Colby scored the next 11 points over a five-minute stretch to lead 41-35 with 52.5 seconds left, before hanging on to the 43-40 win.

Hunter Vaughn led the Eagles with 19 points, while Gus Hawkins paced Scott City with 10.

With the win, Colby has won four straight in Scott City and six straight in the series, which is the longest since 1987-90. They also lead the series since 1979 41-34.
