Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City basketball teams would play on their home court on Thursday night for another night of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic, as the Beavers played host to the Coronado Cougars from Colorado Springs. It would be a split, as the Scott City girls blasted the Lady Cougars 65-19, while the boys dropped a thriller in overtime 58-56

Scott City Girls 65, Coronado 19
Scott City would score the games first 19 points and never look back. The Lady Beavers took a 21-5 lead after the opening eight minutes, and built their lead to 31-8 midway through the second quarter, and led 38-15 at the break. To open the second half, the Lady Beavers scored the first 13 points, and outscored Coronado 15-2 in the third quarter to take a 53-17 lead into the final period. The fourth quarter was a continuous clock, due to the margin being over 30 points, and Scott City would outscore the Lady Cougars 12-2 en route to the 65-19 win.

In the victory, Lady Beaver Head Coach Amy Felker recorded her 250th career record in 18 years as a head coach.

Brooke Strine led the way with 16 points, while Erika Felker added 11 for the Lady Beavers. Coronado saw Ella Leisher lead them with eight points.

With the win, Scott City improves to 3-0 all time against Coronado. It was the most points the Lady Beavers have scored since putting up 67 against Southwestern Heights to open up sub-state play in March of 2020.

Coronado Boys 58, Scott City 56 OT
While Coronado never trailed until the third quarter, the Beavers never went away in the game, despite trailing 12-3 with 3:06 left in the first quarter. Scott City battled back and found themselves down 12-7 after the opening quarter, and trailed by no more than six points for a majority of the second quarter. Trailing 24-19 late in the second quarter, the Beavers scored the final four points of the half to find themselves trailing 24-23 at intermission. Coronado scored the first five points of the second half to lead 29-23, before a Scott City run of eight straight put them ahead for the first time at 31-29 midway through the third quarter. Their lead would be as big as 35-31, before a pair of Cougar three’s gave them the 37-35 lead with 1:39 left in the third stanza. The Beavers tied the game at 37 going into the fourth quarter. Coronado would lead 48-43 midway through the final period, and 51-47 with 1:56 left, before Scott City tied it up with a Gus Hawkins shot with seven seconds left in regulation to force overtime, tied at 51.

In the extra session, the lead was exchanged four times and was tied twice. Scott City led 56-54 with 1:10 left, but were unable to close the game out. Realiti Smith scored all of Coronado’s points in overtime, including the runner in the lane with five seconds left to put the Cougars ahead 58-56. Scott City’s last chance three pointer was slightly to the right as they fell in overtime in a thriller.

Leading the scoring for Coronado was Rayzel Cunningham, who scored a game-high 30 points, before fouling out with 3:35 left in overtime. Realiti Smith added 18 points, for the Cougars, who have won two consecutive games. Gus Hawkins scored a career-high 22 points for Scott City, while Ronnie Weathers added nine.

With the loss, Scott City has now dropped three consecutive overtime games, and fell to 1-2 in the series with Coronado. Each game in the three-game series has been decided by five points or less.
