Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City knew coming in to Monday’s triangular at Lakin that they would be in for a couple challenging matches, as they make their way through a busy stretch of the season. Entering the rankings in Class 3A at No. 10 in the KVCA polls last week, the Lady Beavers would face another ranked team in Goodland, and a team that is picking up steam in Lakin. Scott City would pick up a pair of wins, but Monday’s wins were different. They went to three sets in both matches after having just one three-set match in their previous 10 matches. They knocked off the Goodland Cowgirls 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 in their first match, and held off Lakin 25-10, 21-25, 25-18 in their final match of the day. The Cowgirls won the first match of the day against the Lady Broncs 25-21, 16-25, 25-18.

The first opponent of the day had played a three-set match win, and had the momentum early on. Goodland, ranked No. 9 in the KVCA polls in Class 3A, jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the first set. Scott City would come back in a strong way, using a 10-2 run to lead 20-17. They never surrendered the lead, taking a 25-22 first set win. The Cowgirls got to within 23-22 late, but the Lady Beavers held them off with two straight to win. Goodland never trailed in the second set, but it wasn’t a run away. In the middle of the second set, Scott City found themselves trailing again, at 16-10, before they slowly chipped into the deficit, and tied the set at 18. The Cowgirls would take advantage of hitting errors and closed on a 7-3 run to force a third set at 25-21. In the third set, Goodland led early, and 5-0 Lady Beaver run gave them an 8-7 lead. Scott City would retake the lead at 10-9 and never look back. They built their lead to 18-10, and the closest the Cowgirls could get was at 20-14. The Lady Beavers took the third set and match with a 25-17 win. Five different Scott City players recorded at least four kills in Ella Rumford, Brooklynne Zielke, Peyton Goodman, Kennedy Holstein and Hannah Tucker. Zielke had two block points, and Latta and Rumford each had two service aces.

To wrap up the night, Scott City took on the host school Lakin. The Lady Beavers attacked early and often in the first set, building a 13-3 lead, and cruised to a 25-10 win. In the second set, it was the Lady Broncs who set the tone early, as they started up 4-0, before four unanswered points by Scott City tied it early on. However, the Lady Beavers would not hold a lead in the second set. Lakin jumped out to a 15-9 lead midway through the second set. Scott City tried to make a comeback, but could only get it to within three at 24-21, and eventually fell 24-21. The third set went back and fourth for about the first half of the set. Scott City held an 11-8 lead, before four straight for Lakin gave them the lead. It would be closely contested after that, and tied at 16, the Lady Beavers put the hammer down, and closed out the set and match on a 9-2 run, taking the match 25-18. Kennedy Holstein had nine kills and two service aces, while Brooklynne Zielke added eight kills and Ella Rumford had five kills. Amber Latta had four service aces.

At 10-2 on the season, Scott City heads to Colby on Thursday for a triangular with Colby and Hoxie.
