Scott City tennis fourth at Ellsworth
Ellsworth, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City tennis team placed fourth on Thursday at the eight-team Ellsworth Invitational Tournament. Abilene won the meet with 60 points, Ellsworth was second with 54 and Central Plains came in third with 50 points. Scott City finished with 37 points.
Playing in a bracketed format, Joe Evans took home a first place finish at No. 1 Singles, defeating Trent Evans from Fairfield 8-0, Joey Oberle of Ellsworth 8-6 and in the championship match, knocked off top seed Jase West of Abilene 8-7 (5) in a tiebreaker.
The N0. 1 Doubles team of William Cupp/Miles Haire finished in sixth place. They lost their first round match to Luke Kohler/Cody Schiffner of Abilene 8-3, and bounced back to knock off Jacob Luesman/Kevin Walker from Chapman 8-1, before falling to Trace Leners/Charlie Skidmore of Sacred Heart 8-2 and to Jared Curtis/Kirk Reisner of Hoisington in their final match 8-7 (7) in a tiebreaker.
Victor Martinez was at No. 2 Singles, and finished seventh. He lost his first match to Parrish Blanding of Ellsworth 8-0, dropped an 8-7 (4) tiebreaker decision to Sacred Heart’s Andrew Mosher, and bounced back to top Jacob Peters of Chapman 8-2.
At No. 2 Doubles, Chase Cupp/Porter Irwin came in fourth place. They won their first match 8-3 over John We/Nathan Weis of Sacred Heart, lost in the championship semi-finals to Kade Beck/Brett Liebl of Central Plains 8-1, knocked off Cody Bourbon/David Wesseler of Ellsworth X 8-5 and fell in the third place match to Branden Kerr/Caden Whetzel 8-2.
Up next for Scott City is the Ulyssees Invitational on Tuesday, before hosting the Scott City Invitational next Friday.
