Miller out as Buster football coach

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-After a tumultuous season that closed with one of the worst losses in school history, Garden City Community College Head Football Coach Matt Miller was fired Sunday morning. 

“The decision to separate employment was not reached easily,” Athletic Director Ryan Ruda said in a statement. “However, we appreciate the work Coach Miller has done for us in one season as offensive coordinator and two seasons as head coach.”

Miller’s fate might have been sealed in the third quarter Saturday night in Coffeyville, when the Red Ravens scored 39 points-turning a 31-21 game at halftime, into a complete demolition. Even more so, the Ravens scored 60 unanswered points-completely dominating the Busters in every aspect.

Garden City turned the ball over a season-high nine times and completed just one pass in the second half. The 84 points allowed tied a school record, which was set back in 2012 when Butler handed the Busters an 84-13 defeat. It’s also the second most lopsided loss in school history. 

Garden City finished with a losing record for the second straight season and will miss out on a postseason bowl game for the sixth time in the last nine years. 

“I hope I’m still here next season,” Miller said following Saturday night’s loss. “I see great things coming in the near future for this program.”

In his two seasons as Head Coach, Miller compiled a 6-14 record, which included a loss to Tyler in last year’s Capital of Kansas Bowl. In his one season as offensive coordinator under Jeff Tatum, Miller directed the nation’s sixth best offense-molding future Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall into one of the best signal callers in the country.

A search for Miller’s replacement is already underway. 

“We have young men who we are committed to and will work expeditiously to find the next Broncbuster Head Coach.”

No word yet on what the future holds for the rest of Miller’s staff.
