(westernkansasnews.com) Garden City–Four school districts including Dodge City are appearing before the Kansas Supreme Court Tuesday in a battle over education funding. The state is appealing a lower court ruling that said the legislature must kick in an additional $440 million to fulfill their constitutional obligation of “adequately funding schools”. Although they are on the sidelines for now, USD 457 Superintendent Dr. Rick Atha of Garden City has a vested interest in the case.
Dr. Atha cited this statistic. Before the recession in 2008, Kansas spent about $4500 per student. Today the state spends about $3800.
