Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Lakin Broncs went undefeated throughout pool play and in their final two matches Saturday to earn the 2012 Oakley Invitational Title.
Lakin defeated Goodland, Oakley and TMP-Marian in pool play in the High School in Oakley. In the semi-finals, the Lady Broncs defeated Scott City in three sets and went on to defeat Wheatland/Grinnell in the Championship match.
Scott City went 3-2 Saturday, and finished in third place. Their opening match in pool play was another thriller with Colby. The Lady Eagles won the first set 25-22. Just like the first time the teams played September 13, Scott City won the final two sets 25-20, 25-21 to earn their second victory of the year against Colby. Wheatland/Grinnell would be the next opponent for the Lady Beavers. Scott City dominated every aspect of the first set, winning 25-12. In the second set, it looked like the Lady Beavers would run away with the set, but the Lady Thunderhawks rallied in a fury and won the last two sets 25-22, 25-16. The final match in pool play saw Scott City rolling Quinter to claim second place in Pool B with a 25-11, 25-17 victory.
In their semi final match, Scott City and Lakin would play a tight match throughout, as each set was decided by five points or less. Lakin ended up pulling away with the first set by winning 25-20. The second set saw the Lady Beavers hold off Lakin’s comeback efforts and won 25-21. In the third set, the Lady Broncs led thoughout, and held off runs by Scott City to win 25-20. Scott City went from the High School back to the Impact Center for their third place match. The Lady Beavers defeated Goodland for a second time this year. This time, it was in straight sets, 25-19, 25-16.
With their 3-2 record on the day, Scott City improves to 13-7 on the season and will have a busy week. They will have three days of competition this week, beginning Tuesday at Holcomb in a tri-angular with Southwestern Heights, Thursday in Garden City with Dodge City, Garden City and Ulysses, and will host their invitational tournament Saturday for their final home competition of the season.
